Sports bras - do I need one?
By Tracey-jane Hughes of bras4mums
The simple answer is yes - for any type of sport you're involved with, you need a sports bra. Any form of exercise or fitness class that you're involved in will cause your breasts to move around more than usual. You know this is the case if you run upstairs for something, or have to chase a toddler - your breasts move a lot more than they usually do with your regular bra. A sports bra is designed to offer firmer support to the breasts, even for light exercise, and holds them to the chest wall firmer than a regular fashion bra. There are different styles of sports bra, and depending on the fitness regime you're involved with, will mean you need a different type of sports bra. For Pilates, yoga and low impact exercise, use a simple light support sports bra. For walking and medium impact exercise, use a medium support sports bra. And for high impact sports like running, aerobics and horse riding use a firm support sports bra. Most lingerie shops stock sports bras, so make sure you get the right one for you. The firmer support styles tend to cover the whole breast. You do not need an underwire to give you good support. We really like the Royce, Anita and Freya sports bras that give fabulous support for all kinds of exercise. Remember - if it's not comfy, it's not right!
I'm a Mum of 2 boys and started a bra business by accident almost 6 years ago after I got really bad advice when buying nursing bras. I've since become a bra fitting specialist and run training courses to educate women and health professionals about bra fitting and the impact on women's posture and life in general.

Contributor's Note
As a woman who exercises regularly (running and pilates) I understand the importance of a good sports bra. It can make all the difference to carrying on regular exercise. If you're not comfortable, you're not going to exercise are you? As a bra fitter, I'm happy to offer advice on sizes and styles, so please do comment, or get in touch.
